The duration of a whole house water filter usually ranges between 3 months to 1 year, depending on the type of water filter (filter media) or house filtration system manufacturer or brand. This is the widest duration range, but many whole water house filters fall in the duration range between 3-6 months.

When purchasing a whole house water filtration system, you have to ensure that the included water filter is a replaceable filter. Also, know the duration of that specific water filter so that you’ll know how many water filters you’ll be buying for a year. For example, a sediment filter usually has the shortest lifespan, while the sub-micron post-filter usually has a longer lifespan.

Make Your Water Filter Last Longer

Replace Water Filter Regularly

A water filter has a life cycle. Therefore, when you initially purchase a house water filtration system, the filter will perform at an optimal level. However, when it’s drawing near to the end of its expected lifespan, the water treatment performance will significantly falter. This can reflect in the tap water pressure, water flow, and water quality.

Towards the end of its lifespan, your water filter won’t be as efficient as it used to be in eliminating contaminants such as rust, silt, and sediment from your drinking water supply and this is when it is time to change the whole house water filter.

Know the Duration and Type of the Replacement Filter

There are several optional additions that can be included in the house water filter system package, according to your preferences. Most whole house water filters come with multiple filters. Usually, every whole house water filter comes with a sediment filter.

The optional water filters include a UV filter, activated carbon filter, post-filter, mineral stone filter, and copper-zinc filter. It’s quite a list, but the only filters that can be replaced on this list are the sediment and post-filters.

A sediment pre-filter lasts between 3-6 months. On the other hand, a post-filter can last up to a year. Therefore, you can get 2-4 replacements for your pre sediment filter and perhaps just one replacement for your sub-micron post filter. For your filter tank, the replacement frequency will depend on the type of tank and its capacity.

Clean the Water Filter

If you clean your whole house water filter regularly they can last for:

  • Carbon filters can last up to 12 months
  • Post-Filters can last up to 12 months
  • Pre-Filters last between 3- to 6 months

Get Professional Help

It’s best to leave the replacement for a technician or professional if you don’t know what you’re doing. However, it should be easy for you to do if you have a rudimentary knowledge of plumbing systems and water filtration systems, especially if you’ve owned or maintained one before.
